North Carolina

Well it has almost been a year since we moved from California to North Carolina. We could not be happier here. North Carolina is a beautiful state, the weather is great, the people are nice and the house and yard are wonderful. We are really enjoying the slower pace of life now that we are retired from our mortgage company of 20 years. We get to spend all our time with the dogs. Me and my daughters, Shea, 12 and Riley, 16 have been traveling the East Coast from Pennsylvania to Georgia exhibiting our dogs and client dogs at AKC dog shows. Shea is doing an awesome job! I will post win photos of Shea showing Blais and Merlin soon.

Blue Chi's Ranch

Blue Chi's Ranch

Welcome to Blue Chi’s Ranch located in beautiful Santa Rosa Valley, California just 45 minutes from Malibu and Santa Barbara. We are a small breeder specializing in

AKC Champion Bloodline Blue Long Coat Chihuahuas.

We do on occasion get other colors such as chocolate, chocolate blues,

cream, brindle, blue brindled fawn, sable, combination colors and smooth coats.

Here at Blue Chi’s Ranch we raise

Healthy, Happy and Loving Chihuahuas that are bred to the

Chihuahua Breed Standard.

When we breed, we breed for

QUALITY, HEALTH & TEMPERAMENT

and are always looking to better the breed and to produce show quality pups,

no matter if they are placed in a pet home or a show home.

We take great pride in each and everyone of our adults and babies.

All our babies, our adult Chi’s and puppies are raised in our loving home. We do not have dog runs or kennels, all our babies play in our yard. All our babies and puppies are an important part of our family. Each and everyone of our babies and puppies are spoiled and loved by me, my husband and our four children.

Each and everyone of our adult Chihuahuas gets two complete comprehensive

exams a year. At this time they get any vaccines that are due. They get Blood Cell Count/Differential, Blood Chemistry Profile, Fecal Examination, Dental Examination, Rectal Examination, Otoscopic Examination, Ophthalmic Examination Glaucoma Examination, Urinalysis, Heartworm/Lyme/Ehrichia Test and Dewormed. Once a year they get Dental Prophylaxis, Dental Scaling, Dental Polishing, and Flouride Treatment. I also routinely deworm once a month.

We are very proud of our Chihuahua’s lineage. They come from some of the Top Champion Producing Chihuahua Breeders in the country.

WE DO NOT Sell or Breed

Teacup, Tiny Teacup, Micro Mini, Tiny Toy, Toy, Pocket Size,

Itty Bitty, Miniature, Pocket Pup, or any other name that has been come up with and placed on a Chihuahua to make it sound rare.

We breed Chihuahuas to the official AKC Breed Standard, which describes the Chihuahua as a small dog that comes in two varieties or coat types. The difference in coat type (the Long Coat or the Smooth Coat) is the only official description used to identify a difference within this breed. The Standard does not categorize the Chihuahua by size. For the purpose of showing and record keeping, the American Kennel Club includes the Chihuahua (along with 20 other breeds) in the Toy Group. Therefore, irrespective of their weight or physical stature, all Chihuahuas registered with AKC are considered to be a toy breed of dog.

Chihuahua Breed Standard

We occasionally get some that are going to stay very small but we never classify them as rare, exceptional, hard to come by or slap a label on them to promote the idea of something special. Each and everyone one of our Chihuahua’s is special all on its own. They do not need a fancy label.

Most of our puppies when full grown are between 3 ½ to 4 ½ lbs., but occasionally we will get some that are between 2 ½ to 3 ½ lbs., that are just genetically small. We do not intentionally breed to get the 2 lb. Chihuahua.

We DO NOT ever breed the so called “Designer Dog,”

(a fancy name for a mutt).

We DO NOT sell to anyone that wants to breed the so called “Designer Dog”.

We reserve the right to refuse sale to anyone that does not breed to AKC Standards or that we feel will not give the love, devotion and care for our babies the way we do.

If you are interested in a “designer dog” please visit the animal shelter or

a rescue society, they have many wonderful loving “designer dogs” in

need of a good home and love. The animal shelters and the rescue

societies have many wonderful pets for adoption. Please do not encourage

these breeders to continue mix breeding by buying a “designer dog”

at a purebred or higher price.

If interested in one of my puppies available or a future litter you will

need to complete and submit a puppy application.

All questions must be completed.

All puppies will be sold with limited AKC registration

and a spay/neuter agreement.

Full registration must be pre-approved.

I will then review your application and email you to let you know that

I will be calling you to conduct a phone interview.

My puppies will be ready to go to there new homes at 11 weeks

Vaccine and Bordetella Reactions

Distemper Parvo LA and Corona Virus Vaccine

Although these vaccines are safe and effective, occasionally pets may experience one or more of the following conditions due to vaccines. Chihuahuas however being so small are more likely to have a reaction than a larger dog. Please keep a very close eye on your pet after they have received vaccines. If your Chihuahua exhibits any of these symptoms, give them a little Nutra-Cal every few hours to ensure that they do not become Hypoglycemic and call your vet immediately!

Mild lethargy

Muscular soreness - If pre-medicated with Cortisone this should not happen!

Decreased appetite

Mild Fever

Mild vomiting or diarrhea

These mild reactions usually do not last more than 24 hours. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms please call your Vet immediately do not wait to see if they go away!

Rarely, pets may experience more serious conditions soon after vaccination.

Swelling of the face or ears - If pre-medicated with Benadryl this should not happen!

Hives or significant itching - If pre-medicated with Benadryl this should not happen!

Difficulty breathing - If pre-medicated with Benadryl this should not happen!

Significant lethargy

Significant vomiting or diarrhea

Fluid build up or infection at the injection site

If your pet exhibits any of these signs, bring him to your vet immediately! He or she may need medication to treat the reaction. Please contact your local Emergency Veterinary Service if a problem occurs after your Vet’s regular business hours.

Occasionally, pets that have received injectable vaccinations develop a localized reaction indicated by a small, hard lump under the skin where vaccines were administered (usually anywhere from dime to quarter size). Please have your Vet recheck your pet if this occurs. These lumps may take 1-3 weeks to appear and 2-6 weeks to resolve. They usually do not require treatment.

Rabies

Very seldom, pets that have received a rabies vaccination may develop a small bald spot over the vaccination site. Please contact your Vet if this occurs. These spots are merely cosmetic and may be permanent in rare cases. Treatment may help reduce this possibility.

Bordetella

Pets receiving the nasal drop form of Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccination may experience a upper respiratory reaction approximately 3 days later and as early as 24 hours. Again this is a general statement made about dogs. Chihuahuas are more likely to become sick from the nasal Bordetella than the injectable. My personal experience with Chihuahuas has been that 9 out of 10 times the nasal Bordetella has been administered, they come down with Kennel Cough. Since I have elected to have injectable Bordetella administered, I have not had one Chihuahua get sick with Kennel Cough. Chihuahua puppies can get very sick , very fast from the nasal Bordetella. If you notice them being lethargic or sneezing after the Bordetella vaccination call your Vet immediately and give Nutra-Cal so they do not become Hypoglycemic! Your Chihuahua will need to put on antibiotics immediately.

Boys vs. Girls

It is widely believed that female dogs make better pets. Females as a preference just seem to be ingrained in people. 9 out of 10 phones calls that I get are for people wanting a “sweet tiny little girl that will want to cuddle and just be loved”. Most people do not believe that females display alpha or dominant behaviors such as mounting, humping or marking. I have found that people believe that females are more docile and much more attentive and do not get involved in the “who” is the most dominant fight, “the pissing contest”.

Well, let me tell you that this is not true; they do not call a female dog a “Bitch” for nothing!

Just as with males there tends to be one or more dominant or assertive females when in a pack. Just like males, the dominant female will mark, dominate and hump. The dominant female in a pack is also the one that will keep the order, not the male. As a result, the female will be more independent, stubborn and territorial than a male. If a fight is to break out it will usually be between the dominant females. From my own personal experience, it is the female that rules the roost. There is a reason people use the technical term “bitch” in a negative way, it refers directly to the behavior that is exhibited by the females of the dog world.

Males are usually very affectionate, attentive and less moody. Males tend to be very attached to their people. Males tend to be more outgoing and accepting of new pet additions and quicker to accept children. Just as with men, boy dogs are easily motivated by food, which makes training much easier. However, intact males can be more easily distracted during training, either by a female in season or just by wanting to play. Just as with men, boy dogs tend to like to play more and just don’t want to grow up. Male dogs act like puppies longer. Boys tend to be fun loving until the day they die and females tend to be more reserved almost dignified as they age. Females will usually come to you when they need something or want attention while the males will usually be right at your side.

In most breeds the males tend to get a bit bigger but in the Chihuahua’s I find that this is not true, males and females are equally small and if anything, it is the female that tends to be a bit bigger, if bred correctly and for improving the breed according to the standard. Please beware there are a lot of the so called “Teacup Breeders” out there but it takes a well planned breeding program to keep them on the smaller side of the Breed Standard from generation to generation. Please read The Teacup Myth, this is a must read.

Neutered males very rarely exhibit sexual behavior such as humping or dominant behavior such as leg lifting or marking. Once the testosterone levels have receded after being neutered most of these behaviors will disappear. For best results, (health and size permitting) boys should be neuter by 6 months of age, this usually insures that they don’t ever lift their leg to urinate or mark.

Females also go into heat unless spayed. Dominant females that are intact will leg lift and mark their territory just like an intact male, I even have a little girl that was spayed at 8 months old, prior to going into heat and she will walk around the yard and lift on ever bush and tree. If one of my other dogs takes a poop she will run over and pee on it right away. Females that are not spayed will have the seasonal heat that happens twice a year, this usually last for a whole month each time. Not only will she be miserable but she will be extremely moody and will drive every male in the neighborhood crazy. I even had one female that was my little baby and was inseparable from me until she had her first heat at 14 months and from that time on she did not want to spend time with me anymore. She only wanted to be with my husband. While she was in heat she would camp out on his lap and not move, but if I came near him she would growl. If you are not planning on breeding, you would be best to spay her before her first heat. If you don’t be prepared that during the time she is in heat she will leave a bloody discharge on the carpet, the couches, and the bed and on your clothing. She will be moody and emotional during this time. Ladies does this sound familiar? If you take her for a walk during this time it can become very hazardous. If a male dog is nearby you can count on him catching her scent. Do not be surprised if they follow you and the scent back to your yard and campout for days and howl. Intact females are also more prone to infections, female problems and cancer. Intact males also have a greater chance of getting testicular cancer.

To sum it all up, males are just as sweet if not more so than females and if the big concern is marking than neuter him before the testosterone comes in and you will have yourself your female without all the moody swings.

So before you decide on the age old dilemma of male or female, keep in mind that every dog is a unique and special little individual and no matter which you choose, boy or girl Chihuahuas are bred to be in home companions that require lots of intimacy, love, attention and all the respect that they deserve. In my opinion you will never find a more faithful and loving breed and as they say, “Chihuahuas are like potato chips, you can’t just have one”.
